Folks, I really do not know why this is not taught in every Business School in the world, in high schools, in continuing education courses or at home when growing up.  Loyalty, support, and being a champion for your manager’s and team’s success works.

This formula has worked for me in all my jobs, or at least when I remember that my # 1 job beyond my job description was to make my manager or supervisor succeed and serve them in any capacity I could.   I have been on warning and an action plan in my life, and when I shifted to this formula, without my own agenda, I transformed my relationship with my manager – so this advice is first hand!

The #1 way to be 100% successful in any job is to Make Your Boss Shine.

Now, this is completely different from being overly obnoxious and getting brownie points.

Here are ten key points to Living this well kept secret:

  1. Be Service Minded or Oriented. Always ask your manager, their peers, and all your manager’s direct reports – How May I Serve You Today?
  2. Show Up as someone who is Service-Oriented. Be consistent in how you show up.
  3. Make sure that your communication style is complementary to your manager, your peers, and others in the work place. Not everyone speaks and listens the way you do, you have to adapt to their style so that you will hear and be heard.
  4. Follow Through. Follow up on your phone calls, customers, with your manager…Regularly…
  5. Ask What More Can I Do? in any given situation
  6. Check in with your manager at least once a day and ask them if there is anything you can assist them with…
  7. Ask your manager for guidance on how to handle complex issues periodically…even if you already know how…emulation is the highest form of flattery.
  8. Take the initiative. If you see something that needs to get done, and you know how to do it according to your manager’s or company’s standard, then do it and DO NOT brag to your manager or your peers about doing it. Do this repeatedly.
  9. Be a team player. Be supportive of your peers. Share knowledge and offer support to them when you see them being really busy or stressed or frustrated.
  10. Acknowledge and Thank your manager for something they do that makes a difference to you or others at least once a week. Recall what they did, then indicate that you appreciated that, why you appreciate it, and what difference it made to you, and how you have learned from it. Gratitude goes a long, long, long way.

I know this works…I went from the verge of being fired to being on the A-List with promotions by using these techniques. In fact, anything I recommend as a Relationship, People, and Communication Expert comes from having lived it.
