M asks: Temptation when engaged
How do I avoid temptation? Do I quit my job? I have a good fiance. He drives me crazy but at the most I love him. There is a guy I work with that I am very attracted to. When I was single he was married. Now his wife is leaving him. Now I am engaged. I would never cheat, but why are my feelings so strong? Yes if I was single I would try to have a relationship with him. But I am not. Why am I so tempted and how do I stay away from it?
Dr. Dar says:
Thanks for asking for guidance. My experience is that you may be attracted due to a fear of commitment. I know many Singles who get engaged and then go through what I call a fear state before commitment. The fact that your co-worker is getting out of a marriage and is looking for attraction or solace does not help the situation. I want you to consider whether your coworker is someone you would spend the rest of your life with – chances are the answer is NO. Chances are that he is simply a way for you to ‘avoid commitment’. My thought is that you are just a bit fearful of taking this huge step. My suggestion is that you push through your commitment to your fiance, evaluate whether he is right for you or not, and make your choice to move forward in your engagement and marriage, or not. This is not a question of attraction as it is about you making the right choice for yourself.
